Baptism is the first step of obedience for a follower of Jesus after putting your faith in him. It’s the outward symbol of the inward reality that you’ve been changed by the gospel and you’re ready to follow Jesus with your whole life, for the rest of your life. 

Baptism doesn’t give you a relationship with God, but it does demonstrate the beginning of your relationship with God. It’s similar to how a wedding ceremony demonstrates the marriage relationship. It’s a moment of significance that publicly declares your love for and commitment to a spouse. In a similar way, baptism publicly declares your love for and commitment to God.

In baptism, there isn’t an age restriction, or a maturity restriction, only a belief restriction. This is the beginning of a lifelong relationship with Jesus. As long as you can say “yes” to following Jesus with your whole life, for the rest of your life, you’re ready to take this important step in your faith.
